Our Collections

The National Library's collections are made up of 18 million items, taking up 140km of shelving, and almost 10 million hours of audio and moving image recordings.

The first legal deposit legislation ensured that the National Library would acquire almost every item printed and circulated in the Swedish language since the 17th century, but the collections extend far back into the Middle Ages. In addition to the entirety of Swedish book distribution, our holdings include all Swedish newspapers and journals.

Legal deposits have also paved the way for the development of other collections including postcards, posters, maps, sheet music, advertisements, menus, school yearbooks, annual reports and much more. Our collection of ephemera (transitory printed items such as leaflets, bookmarks, tickets etc) consists of over 14 million objects. All together, the physical collections fill about 140 kilometers of shelving. Legal deposits have also ensured that our collections of music, multimedia as well as radio and television broadcasts are nearly comprehensive.

Search and place orders

Two main catalogues organize the majority of the National Library's collection, Regina and SMDB. You are also welcome to email, telephone or ask in person if you require assistance in accessing the collections.

Regina is the National Library's catalogue for printed materials and e-publications. Some manuscripts, maps, images, sheet music and some other printed items are accessible. Apply for a card online and place loan orders for materials.

Swedish Media Dababase, SMDB

SMDB is the National Library's catalogue for audiovisual materials, including film, television, radio, music and multimedia. Create a user account online and place orders for materials.

Libris is Sweden's national catalogue and search tool with titles from all university, research, and higher education libraries in Sweden as well as a number of public libraries. At times it is useful to perform a search first in Libris, to facilitate localising the find and placing an order for a loan in Regina.
